Note from the General Manager
Welcome to the official website of the Greek Mobile Operators Association.
The Greek Mobile Operators Association (EEKT) is a non-profit organization, founded in 2008 and its mission is the representation of its members common interests at the Greek State.
In 2013 the Mobile Telecommunications Sector completes 20 years of business growth in Greece, a growth that was quite remarkable in the first 15 years the sector was active, an important contribution to the public income and the GDP, as well as investments of 7 billion € in networks and infrastructure, rendering thus this sector is one of the largest investors in Greece. It is worth noting that for the period 2000-2010, the telecommunications sector, with that of mobile telecommunications being its most dynamic part contributed a 9.2% to the growth of the country, becoming thus the 7th most important sector of the economy of Greece. The immediate contribution of the 3 mobile telephony operators to the State income, for the year 2012 amounted to 972 million € paid for taxes and social insurance contributions and in addition 380 million € for licences regarding the use of the radio frequencies spectrum. Together with the rest of the value chain (suppliers and traders), the total of the income for the State generated by this sector in 2011 amounted to 1.99 billion € while it is a sector that is considered to be a model regarding the strict compliance to the tax law.
There is no doubt however that the economic crisis that has prevailed in Greece and Europe has influenced this sector both regarding its finances and its growth. With a cumulative reduction of the GDP of Greece of 17.3%, there has been a remarkable decrease regarding the earnings of the sector of 35.7% since 2007, while earnings before interest, taxes depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for 2012 amounted to 1.08 billion €, that is lower than the corresponding ones in 2003. Still the new technologies market and that of mobile technologies in particular is one of the few sectors that in the midst of the fiscal crisis keeps on growing, investments are been made and positive results are offered to the whole of the society of Greece. In particular, in spite of the adverse economic situation, the mobile telephony companies continue to invest, since 2005, a consistent percentage of their income and EBITDA that is higher than the corresponding one in Europe. Also in the same year there was a direct and indirect contribution of the sector to the economy as a whole with 52 thousand jobs and it was one of the very few sectors that lowered their prices by 78% (total reduction between 2004 and 2012), having today the lowest before tax price in W.Europe.
